When the community kiln opens, you search among the pieces for your gray glazed cup. You find it dark blue, with a green line along one side that you never intended. You recorded the temperatures and mixed the color carefully, so the change feels like a refusal of everything you calculated before firing.

The supervisor explains that ash from another piece crossed the kiln and settled on yours. Restoring the planned color would require another coat that might hide the entire surface. You wash the cup and fill it with tea at the shared table. The accidental green mark begins to resemble a narrow horizon.

You take it home exactly as it emerged. Not because it is better than the image you designed, but because it records what actually happened in the heat among other people's work. Careful craft does not prevent chance. It gives chance a shape capable of lasting. Keep what your hand made and what the kiln added together.
