At the river ferry gate, you discover that your red glove is no longer in your coat. The final boarding bell sounds while morning boats crowd the water. You could return to the cafe and search beneath the table, but the next crossing would make you late for an appointment you do not want to begin with an excuse.
You board with one bare hand. Just before the metal gangway rises, a stranger runs from the cafe holding the red glove above his head. He does not know your name. He noticed only that its color resembled nothing else on the pavement. A deckhand pulls you inward at the same moment the glove reaches you.
Halfway across, you wear both gloves. One is warm, while the other still carries the cold of the dock. The difference lasts until the far bank. Not every loss requires retracing your steps. Sometimes moving forward leaves just enough room for someone behind you to catch up.
