Two hours before the performance, the stage crown snaps where no paint can hide the break. Its appearance was part of your first entrance, and you rehearsed with its weight and shine beneath the lights. A stagehand offers a quick wire repair, but the crooked edge may attract more attention than the scene itself.
You try the entrance without it. At first, your head feels strangely light. Then your hands and voice begin filling the missing space. A sentence that once passed behind the glitter becomes the center of the moment. The director does not ask you to repeat it. She simply removes the crown from the prop list.
When the applause arrives that evening, there is no bright metal to reflect it back or confuse its meaning. The sound reaches you directly, quieter and more honest. What seemed like a necessary sign of your presence had been covering part of it. Losing the decoration did not make you smaller. It let the room see who carried it.
