On a clockmaker's table stands a brass carriage clock that remains silent although its gears appear sound. You came to ask what it might be worth, but the silence makes that question feel shallow. The clockmaker opens the case, cleans a narrow pivot, and closes it without promising that movement will return.
When he shifts the clock from soft cloth to a hard wooden board, the pendulum suddenly begins. Nothing inside the mechanism was broken. The padded surface had been swallowing its smallest motion. You both stop speaking to hear the steady ticking, as if the workshop has gained a pulse nobody knew was absent.
You leave without learning its final price. At home, you try several shelves until you find the place where the sound continues. You choose that shelf not because it looks best but because the clock can breathe there. Sometimes your judgment changes when something finally stands on ground that allows it to work.
