You board a mountain cable car for the wide view, but fog presses against the glass from the first station. Peaks and villages vanish. Several passengers begin calculating what they paid for a white window. The operator cannot change the weather, so he opens a narrow vent near the roof.
Cold air enters with sounds you did not expect: distant livestock bells, water running beneath a bridge, and the whistle of another car you cannot see. A child nearby guesses distances from the volume. You join in, and the ascent changes from a missing picture into a map assembled piece by piece through sound.
The fog does not lift at the summit. Even so, you know where the valley narrowed and where the cable crossed water. The journey withheld the scene you purchased but offered another sense for reading it. A hidden route is not always empty. Sometimes it asks you to change the instrument by which you know you arrived.
