At an independent photo laboratory, images emerge from film left for years inside a secondhand camera. Most show a coast you do not recognize: striped umbrellas, a wooden pier, and a dog running near the water. The canister carries no name, and no face appears clearly enough to offer an easy beginning.
The technician recognizes the pier because a famous storm destroyed it. The umbrellas and the year of demolition narrow the possible dates, but the travelers remain unknown. Rather than hunting for someone who may not want to be found, you arrange the photographs by the changing light, from pale morning to orange evening.
The last frame is almost empty, with the mark of a finger covering one corner of the lens. You keep it with the set instead of discarding it. The incomplete picture still says that someone stood there and tried to hold the moment. Sometimes ordering what reached you is enough, even when its owner remains outside the frame.
