Inside an ice rink closed for summer, workers strip paint before the new season. Beneath the modern markings appears part of an old championship circle, slightly narrower and off center. The renovation plan calls for covering the entire floor with one clean, uniform surface.

Before repainting, you measure the earlier circle and reconstruct it on a separate plan. The rink changed shape twice, and one small offset influenced how that season was played. You suggest preserving a short protected segment near the edge with a simple date beside it.

The new surface is completed and bright, yet one step of the former line remains visible. It will not interrupt a match or confuse a skater. It tells anyone who notices that even the rules once occupied another shape. The future does not require a surface without memory in order to begin cleanly.
