A chess match is about to begin at a table in the public square when you discover that the black bishop is missing. Your opponent suggests postponing. The old wooden pieces have a familiar weight, and any substitute will look foolish before the small audience already gathering around the board.
You pick up a black bottle cap near the bench and mark it with chalk. The light piece slides faster than the others, so you begin using it with a boldness you would never grant the original bishop. Within several moves, the flaw becomes the center of your plan rather than a temporary repair.
The match ends, but the cap remains on its square instead of returning to the pavement. The table's keeper places it inside the box because it now has a history no new replacement could possess. What entered the game incomplete leaves it distinctive. The rules stayed fixed, while your imagination moved more freely.
