Power fails inside a seaside laundromat while white sheets turn through their final cycle. Rain strikes the front glass, and the machines stop full of water. Everyone planned to collect their washing quickly and leave, but nobody can now separate personal belongings from the heavy fabric sealed inside.
The owner brings out a long rope and wooden pegs. Customers fasten it between the interior columns, wring the sheets by hand, and hang them layer after layer. The aisles become a white maze. Strangers begin passing wet corners to one another without asking who owns which piece.
When electricity returns, nobody rushes back to the machines. The cloth moves in air entering through the doorway, and the room looks filled with sails. The storm delayed everyone but created work that required no introduction. Cooperation sometimes begins when the tools that let each person remain separate suddenly stop.
