During a community radio shift after midnight, a caller requests an old song absent from the station library. He says it accompanied the drive home with his father. Searching the shelves lengthens the silence, and you do not want to fill it with similar music that carries none of the same memory.

Instead, you find a harbor field recording made in the same year: chains, waves, and a distant engine. You tell the caller what you found and play it without a long introduction. He stays on the line. After a minute, he says his father worked beside that exact sound.

The requested song never airs, yet the journey reaches somewhere deeper. When the recording ends, you leave two seconds of silence before the station break. Some listeners will remember those seconds most clearly. An honest substitute does not imitate what is absent. It finds another entrance to the same meaning.
