On the building's rooftop apiary, one hive is quieter than usual. No traffic gathers at its entrance, and no steady lines of bees return. You prepare the smoker and gloves, expecting trouble inside the box. Then a single bee appears and traces short circles above the rim.
Instead of opening the hive immediately, you follow the direction of its movement toward the solar panels. In a narrow strip of shade, the colony rests around its queen, slowed by heat rather than illness. You place an empty box and water nearby, then wait until the bees begin entering on their own.
By evening, sound returns to the roof from a different position. Had you treated silence as damage, you might have scattered what was trying to protect itself. The quiet was not an absence of life but a temporary way of organizing it. Watch the smallest signal before opening everything in search of a dramatic explanation.
