Minutes before a planetarium show, the star projector stops halfway through its test. The program is ready and every seat is occupied, but the artificial sky remains fixed above one season. Restarting may take longer than the performance, while cancellation would disappoint visitors who traveled from other towns.

You open the control housing and rotate the main wheel by hand as the lecturer describes each movement. Constellations cross the dome at an uneven pace, revealing how night is assembled from lenses and axles. The malfunction exposes the machine without destroying wonder. It gives wonder another layer.

Afterward, visitors ask more about the gears than about the usual recording. They saw the sky and also the hand that moved it. Perfection often hides its labor, but tonight the seams remained visible. What failed to complete the illusion succeeded in bringing knowledge closer to the people beneath it.
