While restoring a historic staircase, you lift a worn tread and find carpenter's pencil marks beneath it: short measurements, two arrows, and a date. Safety requires replacing the board. Normal procedure would photograph the evidence and send the original piece into storage.

You measure every mark and transfer it in your own hand onto the new support, adding the restoration date in another color. You neither imitate the first carpenter nor hide yourself. When the tread returns, its inner layer carries two clear records of work separated by many years.

Visitors will see nothing while climbing, but the next worker will find both decisions together. Strength lies not only in fresh timber but also in leaving an honest explanation for whoever follows. Hidden work can speak clearly without asking the visible surface for applause.
